Late Pregnancy (Weeks 7–9)

Pregnant dog late pregnancy

The Time Is Drawing Near!

The time for your puppies to enter the world is drawing near! This guide will help owners prepare in advance for a smooth delivery.

Features and Care for Weeks 7–9 of Pregnancy

Let's explore the characteristics and necessary care for the mother dog during her final weeks of pregnancy, right before the puppies are born.

Characteristics of Pregnancy Weeks 7–9

  1. Mammary Gland Development — The mother dog's teats will become firm and swollen, and colostrum (first milk) may start to appear as she nears the time of delivery.
  2. Fetal Bone Development — Around 7-8 weeks, the puppies' bones begin to form. Through X-ray examination, you can check the size of the puppies' heads. This also allows for comparison with the mother's pelvic size to predict the potential for difficult birth (dystocia) and to confirm the number of fetuses.
  3. Fetal Movement — If you place your hand on the mother's abdomen, you will be able to feel the puppies moving.
  4. Nesting Behavior — During this period, mother dogs will often exhibit nesting behavior, such as pawing or digging at the ground.

Mother Dog Care Methods

  • Adjusting Food Intake — In the latter stages of pregnancy, increase her food intake by about one-quarter (25%). This provides the necessary calories and nutrients for the rapidly growing puppies.
  • Creating a Safe Whelping Space — As the delivery date approaches, it's best to prepare a cozy place where the mother dog can be alone, like a crate or a sectioned-off area using a curtain or blanket. This space should allow her to feel safe and secure and is where she will instinctively want to give birth.
  • Responding to Nesting — When she engages in the pawing or digging behavior, do not scold her. This is a natural sign that birth is imminent. Simply observe her from a distance to watch for other signs of labor as the delivery date gets closer.
